Elementary Korean 1002 Homepage: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ealac/korean/index.htm Objectives: This course is designed to develop the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing in Korean. It covers the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary for basic conversation, reading comprehension, and writing sentences to help the students build a solid foundation for further study in Korean language. The course also provides useful information concerning culture (where culture touches on language and communication) and everyday life in Korea. Speaking: Ability to maintain simple face-to face conversation by asking and answering simple questions entirely in Korean Listening: Ability to comprehend the learned materials Writing: Ability to write simple sentences and expression Reading: Ability to comprehension simple texts Learning Materials: Textbook: Integrated Korean: Beginner 1, Young-Mee Cho, Hyo Sang Lee, Carol H. Tests are based upon a cumulation of all materials covered up to the date of test. 2. Types of the tests: □ periodic dictation (vocabulary & sentences) □ quizzes, midterm, and final exam (all accumulative) □ writing tasks on designated topics □ listening comprehension □ presentations Evaluation of students' performance: 1. It is based on attendance, homework, class participation & performance, all quizzes, exams, writing assignments 2. Level of skill at which each student began the course and amount of progress each student makes are taken into consideration. Grading Attendance 5 % Homework 5 % Performance 5 % Midterm & Final 30 % Quizzes 25 % Listening Comprehension 10 % Speaking & Writing 10 % Vocabulary Quiz & Dictation 10 % Make-up policy: No make-ups for daily vocabulary quizzes or dictations will be given. For other quizzes and exams, students are allowed one make-up during the entire semester in case of serious emergency. Please note: 1. Students should note that for language courses a minimum grade of C+ for the spring term and B- at the end of the academic year is required before they may proceed to the second term of the Elementary Korean. 2. Class attendance is mandatory. Absences will negatively affect the grade. 3. The written assignments should be submitted on time. Late homeworks will negatively affect the grade.
