    Learning Objectives
    • Understand health literacy within the framework of culturally and
linguistically diverse healthcare, with a focus on Hispanics in the US.
    • Discuss various practices to address health literacy and make health
information more effective through translation and interpreting.
    • Discuss selective examples of trouble-spots in health literacy.
    • Define and discuss the strengths and challenges that members of the
healthcare team face when treating limited English proficiency patients and
    clients with low health literacy.
Low health literacy, cultural barriers, and limited
English proficiency have been coined the “triple threat"
to effective health communication by The Joint
       Commission (Schyve, 2007)
Schyve. V. (2007). Language differences as a barrier to quality and safety in health care: The Joint Commission perspective. Journal of General Internal Medicine 22(S2).
                                                                        360 361.
       Health Literacy (Ratzan and Parker,
       2000)
Health literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the
capacity to obtain, process, understand basic health
information and services needed to make appropriate health
       decisions” (p. 32)
Institute of Medicine. (2004). Health literacy: A prescription to end confusion. Board on Neuroscience and Behavioral Health. Nielson-Bohlman, L.. Panzer. A.M.. Kindig,
D.A.. Editors. Institute of Medicine and the National Academies. The National Academies Press: Washington, DC.
   This definition is:
    • Patient-Centered, not service-delivery-centered
    • Focuses on patient engagement, empowerment, and
    doing
    • Access, ease and navigation on multiple levels
“This definition expands upon earlier conceptual understandings of
health literacy, which focused chiefly on the written word and native
speakers of English. The Institute of Medicine definition attributes
importance to understanding health information for the purpose of
decision making, which is integral to the multiple areas of health-
       related functioning”
