The Water Molecule • Water in a liquid state cover most of the earths surface. • Water contains: 10 protons, 10 electrons, and 10 neutrons. • Water is a polar molecule. Polarity • The oxygen of end of the molecule has a slight negative charge. • Hydrogen end of the molecule has a slight positive charge Polarity The reasons for polarity • The angles of its chemical bonds. • Oxygen 8 protons much stronger attraction for electrons. • The charges are unevenly distributed, bit like a magnet with two poles. Hydrogen Bonding • Hydrogen bond: the attraction between a hydrogen atom to an oxygen atom. • Because of the positive and negative of a polar molecule. • Water is able to form multiple hydrogen bonds. • Accounts for water special properties. • Hydrogen bonds are not as strong as covalent or ionic bonds. Cohesion • Cohesion is an attraction between molecules of the same substance. • Extremely cohesive because one water molecule can have four hydrogen bonds. • Causes water to from beads on smooth surface. • Produces surface tension (why spiders can walk on water)
