(S*), clerks • Management Information System (MIS) – mid-level mgt. (S), supervisory mgt. • Decision Support System (DSS) – executive mgt. (S) • Knowledge Work System (KWS) - professionals • Group Support System (GSS) – professionals, managers • Communication & Social Media Systems – all groups • Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERPS) – clerks, managers Typologies show similarities and differences between these systems looking from different angels. 3 Bob Travica Typologies of Information Systems: Organizational Function Focus • Based on Org. Function: - Production systems (support the core operations in an organization; UofM: Aurora, D2L/UMLearn…) - Accounting IS - HRIS (human resources) - Sales system, Purchasing system, Marketing system … - In practice, may be called by brand name (D2L, Concur) • These systems are usually TPS & MIS • Key difference between department-based information systems is in the data coverage (look back at schemas for different business domains) 4 Bob Travica Typologies of Information Systems: Time Focus • Based on Time Focus: • Present and past focused: – Supporting & recording current operations – Reporting on the past business – Shorter range decision making • Future focused Past Now Future – Planning, predicting TPS, MIS DSS – Longer range decision making 5 Bob Travica Typologies of Information Systems (IS): User Group Focus Different systems serve different groups of users. Systems have different input data, level of detail, processing capabilities, and outputs.
